The Danger of Unbelief: Lessons from Adam, Eve, and King Saul

Today’s article has a prerequisite: the study of 1 Samuel. It is my prayer that you would read 1 Samuel because it is vital to the character development needed as you journey toward fulfillment. King Saul’s life is detailed in this book, and he is the focus of this article.

In King Saul, we find the same sin present in Adam and Eve (see Genesis 3): the sin of unbelief. It is a sin that is both boastful and ignorant. Rebellion is the fruit of the seed of unbelief. Adam and Eve, through their rebellion, revealed their belief that God would not keep His word. Saul’s acts of rebellion convey the same thought. It is the thought that God is a liar. It is the belief that the created being possesses knowledge and wisdom superior to that of the Creator. It is the belief that the plans of the created being will produce better fruit than what can be produced by the word of the Creator.

This judgment of Adam and Eve and King Saul may seem harsh, but it is true. And unfortunately, it remains applicable to humanity.

When God says He will do something and you do not believe Him, you are calling God a liar. Unbelief in God is extremely dangerous. Unbelief will lead you to make choices that harm yourself and those connected to you. Adam and Eve’s unbelief was detrimental to all of creation. Saul’s unbelief was detrimental to his descendants. Consider now: who is being impacted by your distrust?

God desires that you fully comprehend the power of faith and the danger of unbelief. Faith engenders life and fruitfulness through Christ Jesus. Unbelief always brings forth premature death. Faith in God’s commandments and His promises empowers you to know and fulfill your definite purpose.

Hebrews 3:12 Watch out, brothers and sisters, so that there won’t be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. 13 But encourage each other daily, while it is still called today, so that none of you is hardened by sin’s deception.
