You are a person of purpose. I can tell by the fact that you continue to make your way over here, week after week. You’ve stopped by to obtain that dose of inspiration that will get you through the day. I don’t blame you. I, too, enjoy receiving a powerful word at the right moment. A timely word is life-changing! That’s why I am very excited about today’s message. God has given me a new level of understanding regarding covetousness and envy. I know this counsel is necessary for all generations. When our generation grasps hold unto this message and applies it daily, blessings will flow in a dynamic way.
To begin with, our society encourages ambition and greed. Many people want what they have, and they also want what their neighbors have. When these individuals are unable to access or possess more substance, their attitudes and behaviors become negative. A subsection of this particular group displays this negativity towards the people who have what they want. There are countless stories in the media of how violent and evil individuals behave towards those who have “more” than them. Truly, it is an ugly side to our culture.
Yet, life does not have to be this way. God teaches us the rewards of humility and contentment, as well as the punishments for greed and covetousness. Simply put, there is no happy ending for those who constantly pursue the possessions and lives of other people. There is only reward in living your life, the best way you can.
So how do you get to a place where greed and envy is absent from your life?
The first thing to do is to delight in God.
When you delight in God, you will recognize that in Him lies abundance. All the good that you can desire is found in God. He is peace. He is love. He is justice. He is compassion. He is provision. He is rest. As you come to know Him, you will discover that He wants you to reach a place of all-sufficiency. God does not want you to be in a place of lack. God wants you to have His best for you. That’s an important piece I want you to meditate on. His best for you may not include multiple cars, homes, jewelry, etc. The world may tell you that material things signify wealth. Nevertheless, wealth goes far beyond perishable items.
To delight in God is to pursue Him in every moment. You can relish in the presence of God on your way to school, at work, at home, or even on vacation. You can savor His presence by acknowledging the beauty of His creation or by thanking Him for His protection, or by worshipping Him with other people. As you seek God, your life is transformed. You no longer focus on the seeming vastness of what other people possess. You become enthralled in all that you have in God. You become aware of the unique beauty of your own life. That is the place where you find abundance.
When you reach that place, make sure you enlighten someone of God’s goodness. Help them to reach that place in Him, too.
